Freelance sports reporter

The Outlook sports section is looking for a few entry-level reporters for the upcoming high school season starting in August. This is a freelance, independent contractor position paid by assignment, with rate dependent on experience. The Outlook has developed a good track record of guiding freelancers to platform their work straight out of college and helping them go on to work at other organizations full time. The ideal candidate either can still be in college or is a recent grad who wants to strengthen their experience covering sports games. Experienced sports writers are also welcome. Sports coverage ranges from volleyball and tennis to the major sports like football, baseball and basketball. Coverage area focuses on schools in Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena, San Marino, La Cañada and South Pasadena. Please provide email clips and resume to [email protected].

Responsibilities

Qualified candidates will be given a selection of assignments each week and will choose which games they can attend. Reporters are expected to attend the game in person and write a recap of the contest on deadline. Writers will need to take their own stats and interview coaches and players for their recaps. Reporters also have an opportunity to build on their multimedia platform if they wish. This position will throw reporters into covering things they may have no knowledge of, but there will be ample guidance and assistance ahead of, during and after the event.

Qualifications

Basic journalism knowledge is preferred: writing, reporting and ethics. Basic sports knowledge is also preferred, but not required. Apply tot his job Apply To this Job
