Technical Game Designer

Remote, USA Full-time Posted 2026-06-12

Beef Noodle Studios is looking for an experienced Technical Game Designer to prototype, design, and implement various game systems, features, and content in our endless story generating colony sim. The ideal candidate has deep game design experience as well as game engineering experience. This role is expected to be able to lead design processes, paper prototype, prototype in engine, and work with our engineering team to implement production game logic. Candidates must excel at communication, prioritization, developing feature specifications, implementing game features quickly, and knowing when to cut features. This is a fully-remote contractor position, with the opportunity to convert to an employee after 3 months. Prerequisites

  • Able to work during North American work hours
  • Strong design process
  • Exceptional C# skills
  • 2-3+ years of explicitly game design experience
  • 2-3+ years of explicitly game engineering experience
  • Credit on at least 1 shipped title
  • Strong written and verbal, technical and non-technical communication skills
  • Organized, responsible, and able to work independently
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other designers and engineers
  • Low ego
  • A life long learner mentality Responsibilities
  • Help maintain the game design documentation
  • Help prototype new features (either in engine or on paper)
  • Work closely with our engineering team, designing and extending gameplay systems, understanding deeper engine-level systems, and writing clean extensible code
  • Identify process and tooling gaps, and clearly communicating the need to the relevant parties
  • Work closely with the Art team and help with art and sfx integration Compensation We are offering between $100,000 to $120,000 depending on experience level and skillset. If conversion to an employee occurs after 3 months, employees receive benefits such as 401(k), 100% coverage of health insurance, vision insurance, and dental insurance. Current Game Project We are making an accessible colony sim with a strong emphasis on setting and storytelling. While many games in the colony sim genre lean into giving the player lots of powerful management tools and a complex user interface, we are instead pursuing a more delightfully simple approach that allows newcomers to the genre to immediately pick up and play. For our setting, we’ve chosen a whimsical woodland filled with cute critters, think “Rimworld meets Redwall.”

How to Apply

To apply, please follow these instructions exactly

  • Send your resume in the body of an email (no attachments please), with the subject line Technical Game Designer.
  • Complete the questionnaire below and include your responses in the body of the email after your resume. Please include the question itself above your response text so it is easy to match the questions with your answers. Use your best judgement to respond as thoroughly and concisely as possible. There is no specific expectation for word count. Do not use generative AI tools to respond to this questionnaire; doing so will disqualify you. Questionnaire For the below questions, explain your reasoning and thought processes as clearly and (most importantly) concisely as possible. We do not want long winded answers or answers with little-to-no reasoning or thoughtful reflection.
  • Question 1 What is a game you've played recently? What is something about the game you didn't like? How would you change it?
  • Question 2 Choose a simulation game that you're familiar with where the world felt static. Why did it feel this way? What could be done to make the world feel more alive?
  • Question 3 What is a feature or system that you were responsible for designing that you are particularly proud of? What did the design process look like? Who was involved? Why are you particularly proud of that feature?
  • Question 4 What is a game that you felt had an amazing fantasy (amazing fantasy, meaning a setting or a ludo narrative that you found incredibly compelling)? What did you find so compelling? How did the game mechanics help sell the fantasy? Did anything seem out of place given the fantasy? What would you have added or changed? Thank you for your interest. We will follow up with prospective candidates by July 1st, 2026. Note credit to Supergiant Games for this JD template. Apply To This Job
