Our mission is to empower people and businesses to thrive in an increasingly digital world, and we do it by fostering an environment where curiosity, collaboration, and continuous learning are celebrated every day.

Why This Role Matters

The Senior Big Data Engineer – Remote Data Entry & Pipeline Development position is a cornerstone of arenaflex’s data‑centric strategy. In a world where data volumes double each year, we need visionary engineers who can design, build, and maintain robust data pipelines that turn raw information into actionable intelligence. This role directly influences product innovation, fraud detection, personalized offers, and the overall health of our technology ecosystem.

Role Overview

As a member of the Data Engineering & Delivery team, you will work hand‑in‑hand with seasoned architects, product owners, and data scientists. You will own the end‑to‑end lifecycle of data solutions—from ingestion and transformation to validation and deployment—while championing best practices in code quality, testing, and automation. This is a fully remote position based in the United States (preferred location: Phoenix, AZ), offering a competitive hourly rate of $28 and a full‑time schedule of 8 hours per day.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design & Development: Build scalable, high‑performance data pipelines using Hadoop, Hive, Spark, and related technologies.
  • Code Quality & Review: Write clean, maintainable code; conduct thorough code reviews and enforce coding standards.
  • Testing & Automation: Develop unit, integration, and end‑to‑end tests; implement CI/CD pipelines with GitHub/Bitbucket and Jenkins or similar tools.
  • Performance Tuning: Diagnose bottlenecks, optimize SQL/Hive/PySpark queries, and ensure efficient resource utilization.
  • Collaboration: Partner with product owners to translate business requirements into technical specifications; mentor junior engineers and guide scrum teams.
  • Production Support: Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve production incidents; create runbooks and post‑mortem analyses.
  • Automation & Innovation: Automate repetitive tasks, introduce new data processing frameworks, and evaluate emerging technologies (e.g., Kafka, cloud data services).
  • Documentation: Maintain comprehensive technical documentation, data dictionaries, and architecture diagrams.
  • Strategic Impact: Identify opportunities for data‑driven product enhancements and influence roadmap decisions.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
  • Minimum 3 years of hands‑on software development experience, with at least 2 years leading development teams or scrum squads.
  • Proficiency in Java, Python, or Scala for data‑centric programming.
  • Deep expertise with Hadoop ecosystem components (HDFS, Hive, Spark, Flink) and strong data‑warehousing concepts.
  • Advanced SQL skills, including complex joins, window functions, and performance tuning in Hive/PySpark.
  • Solid understanding of UNIX/Linux shell scripting and automation.
  • Experience designing and operating large‑scale data pipelines for batch and streaming workloads.
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear, concise technical documentation and communicate complex ideas to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications & Nice‑to‑Have Skills

  • Hands‑on experience with cloud platforms such as GCP or AWS, especially services like BigQuery, Redshift, or Dataflow.
  • Knowledge of micro‑services architecture and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Familiarity with messaging systems like Apache Kafka or Kinesis for real‑time data ingestion.
  • Exposure to NoSQL databases (HBase, MongoDB, Couchbase) and their integration patterns.
  • Experience with CI/CD tools (Jenkins, GitLab CI) and infrastructure‑as‑code frameworks (Terraform, CloudFormation).
  • Background in financial services, fraud detection, or risk analytics is a strong advantage.
  • Professional certifications related to big data, cloud, or data engineering.

Core Skills & Competencies

  • Analytical Mindset: Ability to dissect complex data problems and devise elegant, scalable solutions.
  • Leadership: Proven track record of guiding small to medium‑sized engineering teams toward high‑impact outcomes.
  • Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills; comfortable working in cross‑functional, remote environments.
  • Adaptability: Thrive in fast‑changing settings; eager to experiment with new tools and methodologies.
  • Communication: Clear written and verbal articulation of technical concepts, design decisions, and project status.
  • Ownership: Proactive attitude toward end‑to‑end delivery, from design through production support.

arenaflex invests heavily in the professional development of its people. As a Senior Big Data Engineer, you will have access to:

  • Annual learning stipend for conferences, certifications, or online courses.
  • Mentorship programs pairing you with senior architects and industry experts.
  • Opportunities to lead high‑visibility projects that directly influence product strategy.
  • Rotational assignments across data science, analytics, and product teams to broaden your skill set.
  • Internal hackathons and innovation labs where you can prototype ideas and showcase results to senior leadership.

While the base hourly rate is $28, arenaflex offers a comprehensive total rewards package that includes:

  • Competitive health, dental, and vision insurance plans.
  • Flexible paid time off and generous holiday schedule.
  • 401(k) matching and financial wellness resources.
