Â Â Job title: Metadata Management Librarian (Librarian 2 or 3) Company: University of Connecticut Job description : JOB SUMMARY The UConn Library seeks an innovative and creative Metadata Management Librarian to join our Acquisitions & Discovery team. Reporting to the Head of Acquisitions & Discovery, the Metadata Management Librarian creates and manages metadata necessary for the discovery, access, and stewardship of UConn Library collections. Success in this position requires a holistic understanding of metadata's role in facilitating discovery of library resources and applying relevant international and national standards, rules, and best practices for the creation, analysis, enrichment, and maintenance of metadata. As an active member of the Library and guided by our and our core values of kindness and trust, curiosity and inquiry, equity and inclusion, and having fun, the successful candidate will make positive contributions to a culture of inclusion and respect in all interactions within the Library and across the University and will actively exemplify the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and justice in their daily work. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Applies knowledge of relevant international and national standards, rules, and best practices for the creation, analysis, enrichment, and maintenance of metadata at the individual record level and in batch for UConn Library's tangible and electronic collections for all campuses and digital repositories. Performs original and complex copy cataloging for tangible and electronic records in all formats, including books, monographic series, serials, music scores, audiovisual materials including streaming videos, special collections, and theses and dissertations, and applies standards (MARC, MODS, RDA, AACR2, DCRMR, DACS, etc.), and controlled vocabularies (LCNAF, LCSH, etc.). Ensures data quality and integrity in the Library's catalog through routine maintenance projects, contributing to authority control initiatives such as NACO, producing quality catalog records, and managing batch loading of bibliographic records. Coordinates and creates the documentation of cataloging and metadata standards, policies, and workflows in conformance with current cataloging standards and practices. Collaborates across the University to develop and enhance procedures for effective metadata management. Develops operational solutions to metadata access and discovery problems. Participates in collections maintenance in shared print initiatives, including the Eastern Academic Scholars Trust (EAST). Additional Responsibilities for Appointment as Librarian 3 Identifies opportunities for innovation within metadata management. Uses advanced professional knowledgebase and skillset to proactively identify and resolve critical needs as related to the position, serving as a subject matter expert to others. Performs duties parallel to position responsibilities as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • A graduate-level degree in a field relevant to the position or a graduate degree in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association-accredited institution (or international equivalent). Minimum of three years of post-graduate related professional experience. Commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and justice, and demonstrated ability to make positive contributions to a culture of inclusion and respect in all interactions within the Library and across the University. Previous cataloging experience with the demonstrated ability to perform original and complex copy cataloging in a variety of formats, using cataloging and classification practices and standards such as RDA, DCRMR, MARC21, LCSH, LCC, Dublin Core, MODS, and Program for Cooperative Cataloging standards (CONSER, NACO, SACO). Knowledge of metadata tools and systems for creating, editing, and transforming metadata (e.g., Oxygen, MarcEdit, OpenRefine). Evidence of delivering reliable, effective, and appropriate verbal and written communications that follow current professional standards across diverse audiences. Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively and effectively use analytical and problem-solving skills in both settings. Evidence of participation in and engagement with professional activities at a statewide, regional, and/or national level. Additional Minimum Qualifications for Appointment as Librarian 3
  • Minimum of six years of post-graduate related professional experience. Evidence of an advanced knowledge level and currency in professional standards, practices, procedures, policies, and technologies as related to position responsibilities. Evidence of active engagement and significant contributions to professional activities at a statewide, regional, and/or national level. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS For All Appointments
  • Experience with the ExLibris Alma library management system. Advanced knowledge of identity management and authority work (e.g., Wikidata, LC Name Authorities, ORCID, etc.). Working knowledge of one or more high-level scripting languages (e.g., Python). Experience working with APIs and with normalizing and scripting transformations of structured metadata in an XML environment (e.g., JSON). Proven success with project management. Demonstrated experience applying the values of diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and/or justice in cataloging and metadata projects. Demonstrated experience in training others in technical service procedures.
